About Hanover
Hanover is York County's second city: 16,429 in the borough (2020), about 57,000 across the 17331 ZIP, 24,000-plus homes, with the largest cohort built in the 1950s. It is 19 miles southwest of York and home to Utz and Snyder's.
What the numbers mean here
Hanover has the most radon tests on file of any zip in this guide, 7,900 in basements, and the highest single reading DEP has recorded in the set: 1,259.7 pCi/L, more than 300 times the action level. Post-war block foundations here generally mitigate well with a single suction point.
Who serves Hanover
Hanover is closer to Gettysburg than to York, so Radon Protection Services of Gettysburg (DEP firm #0275, installing since 1995) is often the nearest certified crew, alongside SWAT's West York line and Absolute Radon. DEP-certified tester Lewis Wertz (#3526) is based in Hanover. Every firm must be DEP-certified; check the York County certified list.
What it costs
Same as the rest of York County: $800 to $2,500 for a system, most near $1,000 to $1,500, plus $30 to $100 a year to run the fan. Details on the cost page.
Next steps
Test first (a free kit from lungradonkits.org is fine for a first look). If the result is 4.0 or above, get two written bids from certified firms using the vetting checklist. Retest 24 hours after the system goes on, then in the opposite season.
